History of kindergarten work from the 19th century onwards

The Kindergarten Museum is the only professional museum in Finland specializing in the history of kindergarten work. The museum has collections of objects and photographs, and a library. The collections form a broad picture of the history of Finnish early childhood education.

The Kindergarten Museum records the history of Finnish kindergarten work and early childhood education. The collection policy program
guides the collection activities in the museum. The main recording responsibilities are objects, photographs, and memory data
related to the Ebeneser kindergarten and kindergarten seminar.

The collection includes material related to kindergarten teacher education from a cultural-historical perspective. The museum is especially
interested in material related to teacher education at Ebeneser. Additionally, the museum can document material about teacher education in later
decades in the collection as reference material.

The museum also collects material related to the activities of other Finnish kindergartens and early childhood education (ECEC) centers at discretion.
The material included in the collections is typically toys and pedagogical material used in kindergartens and ECEC centers. The Kindergarten Museum
is also interested in memory data on the activities of kindergartens and ECEC centers from the perspectives of both children and adults.

The Kindergarten Museum also records material related to current activities in ECEC centers. For example, a recent case we have documented is
the global pandemic (Covid-19) and its effects on the operation of ECEC centers in Finland. You can read about the results of the documentation project
in the Kindergarten Museum's blog article emergency conditions in ECEC centers Poikkeusolot päiväkodeissa "Milloin tämä loppuu" (the article is in Finnish).

The Kindergarten Museum currently documents the operations of the city of Helsinki's ECEC center Ebeneser according to a separate plan.
The documentation cooperation project has a research permit issued by the city of Helsinki.
