Ebeneser – At the Roots of Finnish Kindergarten Education

Where did Finnish early childhood education begin? What makes Ebeneser House an important historical landmark?

This guided tour for adult groups explores the history of kindergarten work and Finnish early childhood education, with a particular focus on its early development. The tour introduces visitors to a 20th-century kindergarten and to Froebelian kindergarten pedagogy in an authentic historical kindergarten setting.

The tour can be tailored to the group's interests, and any specific wishes regarding the focus of the tour can be taken into account in advance.

Spatial Stories

The Spatial Stories guided tour explores Ebeneser House from the perspective of space and spatiality. The tour considers how kindergarten spaces in the past and early childhood education settings today have been designed, what ideas and principles have shaped their design, and how people and their activities have shaped the spaces around them.

The Ebeneser kindergarten, which operated in Ebeneser House, serves as one of the examples. Did children have personal space in the kindergarten? What might a child-centred space look like?

The tour also explores the relationship between space and time: what different layers can be found in an early childhood education setting, and how have these layers come about?

The tour can also provide ideas and practical tools for developing the spatial solutions and learning environments of your own early childhood education setting.

Building Possibilities – A Construction Workshop for Adults

A hands-on workshop for adults featuring building with authentic Froebel blocks and giant-sized blocks. Simple blocks can be transformed in countless ways, inviting participants to discover the possibilities of form. The workshop approaches building from the perspectives of the properties of shapes, aesthetic possibilities, and representation.

Participants build both guided and spontaneously, individually and together as a group. The experiences and ideas explored in the workshop can be applied directly, or adapted, when working with groups of children.

The workshop begins with an introduction to the philosophy of the educationalist Friedrich Froebel (1782–1852). The practical part starts with exercises exploring Froebel blocks, followed by a more embodied approach to building with giant-sized blocks. The giant blocks are oversized Froebel blocks created collaboratively by the Kindergarten Museum and artist Alexander Reichstein.

Duration: 1 hour
